The last angel took flight.
Even the masked devil turned away.
And so it was that John D. made for the gloomy swamps.
His son nestled like a bundle on his breast,
the old Army backpack, filled with iron tools, weighed heavily on his back.
As the new day broke
the darkness in their hearts slowly waned
and John D. fought his way through the
undergrowth.
The hungry eyes of his son silently placed their trust in him.
The tools he left behind, marking them with twigs, in a deserted clearing.

Way up above him, way up above him
he saw the old highway, familiar from bygone days
raced the golden highway of salvation,
promising an easy way out.

he knew where the highway led, but he didn’t want to go there no more.

As the sun reached its peak
and forced them further
into the unknown that lay before them,
fear slunk out of John D.’s heart like a snake
and the rising light gave him a sense of freedom.
The stones there had no names,
the river not yet a face,
but in the breath from their bodies they still pulsated,
The voices of the nave,
whispering poison in a scarlet robe of penitence.
